Toyota had several goals while designing the GR86; primarily affordability, handling and as much fun-to-drive as they could manage. The car's rear-wheel drivetrain is mated to a torquey, efficient powertrain, all built on a lightweight platform that makes a very fun-to-drive package. The 2.4L horizontally opposed engine makes 228 horsepower and revs all the way to 7,000 RPM. Coupled with the car's light weight and a choice between a precise 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission, this engine offers the Toyota strong straight-line thrust while returning up to a combined 22 mpg. The 2024 Toyota GR86 is offered in three trim levels: Base, Premium, and TRUENO Edition. The base trim comes decently equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, leather-trimmed steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen display, a 6-speaker audio system, limited slip differential, sport bucket seats, keyless entry and a rearview camera. The Premium trim features a rear lip spoiler, 18-inch black wheels, heated front seats, leather upholstery, sport pedals, and an 8-speaker sound system. Toyota offers several dealer-installed performance accessories including TRD performance air filter, TRD lowering springs, TRD performance dual exhaust and a TRD sway bar kit. From a safety standpoint, the GR86 offers plenty of electronic assistance. Anti-lock brakes are of course, standard. Traction control and stability control are also included but can be switched off for serious track work. The GR86 also comes standard with six airbags, including side curtain airbags and dual-stage advanced driver and passenger airbags. Additional standard safety features on the automatic transmission versions of the GR86 include lane departure warning, blind spot warning, forward collision mitigation, rear collision warning and a driver attention alert.
